Chapter 9
The road to recovery was not an easy one for Linda. She spent two weeks in the hospital and two more at a rehabilitation center. Martin and Ryan tried to keep things status quo at the ranch and their everyday lives. It was hard sometimes. Ryan found it most difficult to see his dad weep.
Ryan stumbled into the kitchen to start the coffee. Theyâd become so spoiled by Linda having everything going first thing each morning and every meal in between.
Martin was sitting at the table, his face in his hands. He quickly brushed his face with his hands and wiped the tears on the napkin nearby.
âGood morning, Son.â
âCoffee?â Ryan asked as he filled up the coffee maker with water.
âSure. That would be nice,â Martin replied.
Ryan busied himself with grinding beans and getting the coffee maker ready. He got down two mugs. âWhat should we have for breakfast?â
âI donât much feel like eating,â Martin said, his breath caught on a sigh.
âDad, you have to.â Ryan opened the cupboards and took out a box of Wheaties. He gave it a shake. He made a mental note to stop by the grocery store.
Ryan set two bowls, the bowl of sugar, and the box of cereal on the table. He fetched the milk out of the refrigerator. The glass bottle was really cold in his hands. âI need to stop by old man Rectorâs place. We need eggs, milk, and cream.â
Martin nodded.
Ryan tipped the carafe and filled up the cups and then placed the glass container on the hot pad centered on the table. Martin immediately picked his up and started to blow on it. He gingerly took a sip. âGood coffee,â was all he said.
Ryan filled up his cereal bowl and poured the icy cold milk on top. He sprinkled in a spoonful of sugar and dug in. The only sounds coming from the kitchen were the crunching of cereal and the slurping of coffee. Ryan couldnât stand the silence any longer and was about to say something when Brook barreled in.
âGood morning, family!â she said.
Ryan watched Brook as she went to the fridge for something. She opened the door and looked intently for a few seconds.
âGet something out and close the door. Youâre letting all the cold air out,â Ryan shouted.
Brook shot him an evil look. She stuck her tongue out at him. She pulled the orange juice out and went to the cupboard to get a glass.
âWhen is mom going to come home?â Brook asked as she sat at the table with her family.
âA week from today,â Ryan said.
Martin just stared into his coffee cup.
âDad, eat some cereal. We have a busy day out at the tasting room. Iâd love to be finished with it by the time mom gets home. Sheâll love it.â
Martin went through the motions of eating, but he couldnât really taste anything. He was numb. He missed Linda so much.
âCan you give me a ride to school today?â Brook asked looking at her dad.
âIâll take you,â Ryan interjected.
